The race to fuel the artificial intelligence boom has officially left Earth. Euwyn Poon, the co-founder of the e-scooter sharing giant Spin, has successfully raised $5 million in seed funding for his new venture, Orbital. The ambitious startup aims to launch over 10,000 space data centers into low Earth orbit, creating a highly scalable, extraterrestrial computing infrastructure designed to meet the skyrocketing demands of modern AI model training and web hosting.

Why Space Data Centers are the Future of AI Infrastructure

As AI tools and massive language models grow exponentially, terrestrial data centers are pushing global energy grids to their absolute limits. By deploying space data centers, Orbital plans to leverage constant, unfiltered solar energy and the natural cooling of space to run massive computational workloads. According to a report on TechCrunch, Poon’s background in building and scaling physical hardware at Spin—which produced 250,000 e-scooters—gives him a unique edge in mass-producing satellite payloads. Instead of traditional satellites, Orbital’s units will act as decentralized nodes floating in orbit, ready to process complex tasks away from Earth’s congested infrastructure.
